What is Magnesium Nitride?

Magnesium Nitride, is an inorganic molecule with the chemical formula Mg3N2. It's part the cube crystal system. At temperatures of room temperature, the pure magnesium nitride is a yellow-green powder, but magnesium nitride containing some magnesium oxide particles is grayish white.

The molar mass of magnesium nitride is 100.95g/mol. Their density stands at 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium Nitride is totally dissolved in water and acid, but is only partially dissolved in the ethanol and ether.

The melting point for magnesium nitride can be found at 1500 degrees. Magnesium, like other metal nitrides, reacts with water to create ammonia. It is often used as a catalyst. They react with acid or nonmetallic oxides that result in ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.

Magnesium nitride is ceramic in nature. Magnesium is abrasion-resistant material that has excellent resistance and dramatically improves the efficiency of production. Magnesium nitride also boasts high thermal conductivity, aswell as high corrosion resistance and temperature resistance. Magnesium nitride also has a great importance because it is used as a catalyst used in the creation of boron nitrogen.

What is Magnesium Nitride Used For?

1. Used as a catalyst when make the nitride out of other elements with high hardness with high thermal conductivity corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high temperature resistance. The first successful process of synthesis of cubic bore nitride its catalyst was magnesium nitride.

2. This is a high strength steel smelting additives. Magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) replaces the magnesium that has been desulphurized for construction melting, which helps in increasing the density strength, tension and bearing force of steel. In addition, using of magnesium Nitride (Mg3N2) desulfurization, may lower the amount of other additives, helping to lower the cost of manufacturing construction steel.

How to Make Magnesium Nitride?

The current preparation methods of magnesium nitride are direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, method of reaction of magnesium and nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow the method of magnesium coil explosion in nitrogen atmosphere as well as low-pressure chemical gas complementary product method, self-propagating high temperature synthesis method, nano-magnesium nitride synthesis methods for example.

Recently, G. Soto et al. created amorphous magnesium Nitride films that had different Mg/N ratios Si substrates in a molecular nitrogen atmosphere through pulse laser deposition. These methods are limited in their production in the industrial sector due to the high price, lengthy process complex operation of equipment or a low yield of magnesium nitride.

The following conclusions can be drawn from thermodynamic analysis, liquid ammonia may react with magnesium powder more readily than nitrogen in the preparation of magnesium nitride. Good quality magnesium nitride, with consistent and high purity particles is made by heating it to 600 and ammonia at 1hand then heated to 800degrees, with an ammonia flow rate 500ml/min and the nitriding period of 1 hour.
